Time to get some sleep!

NEXT POST: PROVI-DANCE !!

May 10, 2008

YES YES YES. D. W. E!!

AS PROMISED, I've got all the details for you hot-pants-wearin', long-haired, clubbed-out, freaky-deaky motherfuckers.  Dripping with Enthusiasm is upon us!

THE PARTY JUMPS OFF AT 9 PM, BUT NO HURRY.
'Cuz DWE ends when people stop dancing, and my play list is at LEAST an hour and a half long.  I don't know about the other DJs.

The Oxfam Café is on the Tufts University Campus, in the grunge-y awesome basement of Miller Hall.  It's a big space with awesome speakers, and four DJs who know how to bring the jamz and the crowdz.  There's no security, but don't be a fool.

IT'S FREE.  IT'S ALL AGES.

There's a free shuttle that you can catch right outside the Davis Square T stop.  Or you could walk up Holland Ave.  It would take about ten minutes.  The directions from the Oxfam Myspace page are so damn good that I'm just gonna copy them straight into my post.  Consider yourself lucky if you've got a fast bike!

HOW TO GET TO OXFAM

You don't know where Oxfam is? No problem! If you're coming from Davis Square, you can walk (see directions below) or you can take a shuttle which runs every 20 minutes (30 min. on the weekends) directly from Davis to a block away from Oxfam! The shuttle picks up directly across from the Somerville Theatre. Get off at the 2nd stop (Carmichael stop).

Walking from Davis Square: Walk up Holland Ave toward Teele Square. Turn right after the playground onto Paulina Street. Turn left and walk down Broadway for one block, then take a right on Packard Ave. This will take you into the Tufts campus. Keep going up Packard until you reach the top of the hill. Oxfam is in the basement of Miller Hall, the brick building which will be on your left, on the block bordered by Professors Row, Curtis/Winthrop St., Capen St., and Packard on this map. Refer also to campus map. Miller is at B-2 on the map.

On the Bus from Davis Square:
--Take the Tufts shuttle [free, no ID card necessary] from Holland Ave, right across from the T station and Somerville Theater. Refer to shuttle schedule here.
--Take the 96 or 94 bus to the corner of Boston Ave. and Winthrop St. Walk up Winthrop, and take a left on Capen. Refer to campus map to find Miller Hall, B-2.

Anyone want a ride?  Or anyone want to split a taxi with me on the way back?!

and FYI, here are some excerpts from my PLAYLISSST.
Control- Kid Sister
Dutty Wine- Tony Matterhorn
Stilletos Remix- Crime Mob + 2 + DJ /Ruture
What's Your Fantasy- Ludacris
Bamboo Banga- M.I.A.
Gasolina- Daddy Yankee Ft. Pitbull
...
etc. etc. etc.

I will not sacrifice my sanity for my blog!

Here's my deal:

My last assignment for this semester goes in on Friday.

I started my day-job working at the new Tannery in Harvard Square, Cambridge yesterday.  I sell shoes.

I'm DJing Dripping with Enthusiasm on Saturday, and I've got two Globe pieces to work on.

There's a lot on my ambitious little plate.

Posts will be shorter.  For about a week.  Then I'll be back in full force.

LOOK FOR INFO ON THE DWE PARTY this SATURDAY NIGHT.

I am an HTML GOD!

SO. A week back I had a party at my house.  We ran out of booze, but we DID happen to have a crate full of magic markers, and about a hundred posters for the upcoming DRIPPING WITH ENTHUSIASM FREE. ALL AGES. BYOB. DANCE PARTY at the Oxfam Café on the Tufts University Campus this SATURDAY, thanks to Dan Shea and Bodies of Water Arts and Crafts.  We're going to be postering up in ur campusez REAL SOON, and I'm going to be hooking it up with more info (i.e. the details on the FREE SHUTTLE from Davis Square, directions by car, etc. etc.) in a few days.  I just wanted to show off all of our hard work.  Which one do you like best? If you mouse over, a number will pop up.  Leave a comment on which is your favorite (these are only the 10 best, out of about 30), and I'll be sure to buy the artist ice cream or something. :)  OH MY GOD I'M WICKED EXCITED.  DID I MENTION IT'S GOING UNTIL 3 AM?!

Boston: House Show Mecca?

It would seem that Boston is quickly overtaking Brooklyn in the house/loft/basement show game.  There are a dozen every weekend, and they're great!  Up the DIY!

On Saturday, the same night as round DEUX of the MIT Steer Roast, the No Age/Big Digits/Neptune show at TT's, AND the (sold-out) RJD2 show at the Paradise, there's going to be another great ROCK/EXPERIMENTAL show over at the Nom D'Artiste loft in Chinatown, who seem to be booking a show a week.  Not bad, guys.  It looks like it's going to be a good one- lots of touring bands, playing rock, psych-rock, improv., etc.  But I think it's going to be, in general, a very ROCK oriented kind of show.

OHMIGOD DOMAIN NAME!

Under21inboston

That's my new URL-  WAY easier to remember...

It would seem now that I am infinitely more legitimate as a member of the blogosphere.  Snazzy, right?

HI GUYS//
SO CHECK IT OUT.  This is going to be an INCREDIBLE weekend for ALL BOSTONIAN WALKS OF LIFE.  You name it- it's out there.  Check the calendar for info on the NO AGE/BIG DIGITS/NEPTUNE WZBC show at TT the Bear's in Central Square, Cambridge on Saturday.  THEN, there's the Winter Camp 181 DIY Potluck/Concert/Movie Night ft. Brian S Ellis, Milo Greene, and Monstery, also in Central Square, on Sunday!
Thanks to Everybody So Gorgeous for this listing.  You can e-mail them, via their website, with questions about content and address etc.  Ben's a real nice guy- he'll help you out.

Roastmeat_resize
Friday night- the MIT STEER ROAST BEGINS HOLY SHIT!!!
This yearly party thrown by the MIT senior house is supposed to be the most ridiculous thing since sliced bread.  It involves HUGE SLABS OF MEAT ROASTED ON A SPIT OVER AN OPEN FIRE (pictured above), LIVE MUD WRESTLING, and AWESOME MUSIC provided by the likes of Neptune, Excepter, Space Faces, and more. Not only that, but this will probably be the most intense display of relief and victory that you will ever see in your life.  If YOU made it through four years of MIT, you'd probably feel a bit of a weight off your shoulders as well.
The only PROBLEM is that it's guest list only!

HERE is the LINK that you can send to your MIT friends and acquaintances that will take THEM to the form  required for submitting guest list spots.  Good luck getting in- capacity is minimal so show up early, and make sure you're on the list.

Anyways, all your friends have to do is fill out a short form, which should take all of thirty seconds, and then PRESTO, you're on the guest list, and you get to go to the most ridiculous fucking party of your life.  And see EXCEPTER and NEPTUNE.  The party goes for TWO FUCKING DAYS.  Here's how the schedule breaks down, in case you're curious:

This party's got a little of everything- indie rock, funk, hip-hop, progressive hard-rock, ambient, experimental, electronica.  God I'm so fucking excited.  Seriously, get on it guys.  Start facebookin,' or devise a really good plan to sneak in, although that's probably not going to work.  Or you might be able to show up and beg.  Who knows?  There's other stuff to talk about this weekend, but I had to give this party a full post.  Ohhhh man.

BULLSHIT

I JUST FOUND OUT THAT THE UNMISTAKABLY MEXICAN ACCENT OF TACO BELL'S CHIHUAHUA IS ARTICULATED BY AN ARGENTINE EX-PAT FROM L.A.

I CALL SHENANIGANS!

And as I mentioned previously:

Blog Remix #3

So I guess this is becoming a regular thing, huh?

Mp56

I just finished a remix of a track by German Goth-Techno-Industrial-Thrash-Breakcore producer Panacea.  It's pretty good, so I figured, why not post it?

AND.  I would LOVE to start posting more music (rock, indy, dance, hip-hop, WHATEVER) by local Boston artists.  So if you've just finished recording or producing a track that you think your fellow Bostonians would like to hear, leave me a comment with a link to your myspace, or send me an e-mail with a track in it, and I think it would be great to do a weekly focus on up-and-coming Boston musicians.  Other than myself.

Here it is.  It's really Hi-Fi, so I would definitely make a point of listening to it on big-ass speakers, or at least on headphones.  Laptop speakers really don't do justice to anything.  (it starts out soft, don't get discouraged)

Max's Recommended Events Tuesday through Thursday!

So what's going on?

Let's see:

The calendar just got an AWESOME update, thanks to hours and hours of listing research, and this week is looking almost as good as the one AFTER it.
This week, we've got (some of which will be discussed in more detail later):

TUESDAY:

Mass. Underground @ The Middle East Vol. 2: Boston's Best Noise/Experimental/Sound Design hits the clubs!
FEATURING.
NMPERIGN   & Jason Lescalleet, X04,   Sharpwaist, Kate   Village, Xiphoid   Dementia
$8 COVER//18+//8:30 DOORS//UPSTAIRS

WEDNESDAY:

In Western Mass., the monthly Phantom Brain Exchange, an open-mic night for the art-damaged adults and the hipsters, goes down at the Rendez Vous in Montague, MA, roughly 6 miles north of UMass.   This beautiful, newly renovated bar's got no problem with letting you in if you're not twenty-one.  It's one of the few great places in the Pioneer Valley where an underage student can see live music, performance art, poetry, or dance like an idiot on one of their famous party nights (usually Fridays).  Did I mention they serve the best bar food I've ever encountered?  Here's a PDF of the directions from their website.
$5 COVER//ALL AGES//9PM//TURNER FALLS, MA

THURSDAY:
FIVE, count 'em, FIVE events on a Thursday night.  Three DIY jumpoffs, the weekly Drum N' Bass dance party night at the Phoenix Landing in Central Square (consistently my favorite dance party night in the Greater Boston Area), and a KEITH FULLERTON WHITMAN show @ The Lilypad in Inman Square, Cambridge.Picture_16

Keith Whitman is one of the greatest, least BORING, electronica experimental composers and performers ever to come out of the East Coast.  His music is layered, euphoric, and filled with nuances- the kind of shit you want to either hear live or on $400 headphones.  He uses synthesizers, samplers, circuit-bent toys, laptops, and other gadgets to create a diverse array of sounds, from head-bobbing percussive lines made of 8-bit pops and squeaks, to swelling soundscapes with the subtlety of everyday sounds.  I'm not kidding.  Listen to his myspace.  He also performs SUPER RIDICULOUS HARDCORE REGGAE BREAKBEAT GLITCH MADNESS under the name Hrvatski, and has been released on such prominent labels as the British electronica giant Planet Mu.  They're both fucking awesome.
I'm actually in love with him.  Sorry Emma.
The Lilypad is going to be an incredible place to see such a well-known performer.  Talk about intimacy.  The show's at 10 PM, and he will be playing alongside GREG DAVIS and the "avante-folk" trio MEGAFAUN.  Big names.  Small Venue.  Good Stuff.  Directions.

$5//ALL AGES//10PM//INMAN SQUARE, Cambridge
THEN, this weekend is so full of options that I ACTUALLY don't know what I'm going to do with my time.  More info on that stuff later.  Check the calendar if you're curious.

Psych-Rock Chinatown, Psych-Folk Somerville

"This is the way we wash our paw.  Wash our paw.  Wash our paw."

ANYWAYS, that was just some fucked up shit I encountered while surfin' the internet.  HAHA.

I wanted to let you know that there's some good stuff going on this weekend.  I don't have much time to chat, because I've got a deadline to meet on an upcoming globe article and I still have to take the time to figure out how I get into on-campus apartments at Hampshire next year.  OH AND DID I MENTION THAT DEAD PREZ IS PLAYING AT HAMPSHIRE TOMORROW?!  It's gonna be a shit-show in the best sense of the term.  Fucking Dead Prez.

But getting back to the Greater Boston Area, there are two great shows going on tomorrow, Saturday, April 26, and it's a shame that they have to be happening at the same time.

TRUMAN PEYOTE, who I just can't get enough of, are playing with some other local psychedelic and/or "tribal" rock, folk, and glitch beats performers at the OXFAM CAFÉ at Tufts University.  The line-up is going to look something like this:

MANNERS

PRINCE RAMA OF AYODHYA

and

MANY MANSIONS + BAIXA, who play really great sample-driven, percussive psych-folk beats.  Honestly, I can't help but think of Panda Bear, as silly a reference as that is.  Regardless, they're really great, and they sing IN HARMONIES and play LIVE DRUMS TOGETHER.  Both of these skills are lost arts, and are intense to see in person, in combination with cool samples and tons of energy

FREE//8PM//ALL AGES//BYOB//DAVIS SQ. REDLINE

Directions are here and on the Oxfam myspace.

And THE SAME NIGHT, there's a show at the Nom D'Artiste Loft in Chinatown, if you know where that is, featuring a bunch of harder psych-rock bands.  If you don't know where that is, send me an e-mail and I'll hook you up with an address and directions.  Or you could do some internet research and probably find the spot within twenty minutes.  It should be really fun too, and the spot is right off of the green and red line.  Like I said, if you're in the know, cool, and if you're not, don't hesitate to contact me at maep07 @ hampshire (.) edu.

Here's the e-mail I got from the Nom D'Artiste guys:

Human Adult Band is a trio from New Brunswick, NJ that is reminiscent of listening to Flipper during a grape flavored robotrip.

Lazy Magnet, the once solo project lead by Jeremy Harris is like receiving a radio frequency from a planet of songwriting genius's.

Haluze: A Czech word meaning branch or random coincidence. Also meaning psych out with you your Czech friend.

Riddlin- Dreamy Ryan Riehle who has just returned from two months in India to show off his newly acquired conspiracy theories and electronic tabla.

Puritan Agenda- Jeff Mack and Buzz "The Absurder" Gunderson share their latest visual and auditory  hallucinations:A Plague of Voices.

Special performance by Muffy Brandt and other fine ass Providence ladies!!!

8 dollars//9PM//ALL AGES//BYOB//Boylston T stop

and lol at getting attacked on Lemmingtrail for off-handing a comment about the stagnant, barely provocative state of Boston's experimental community.  Some guy said my opinion didn't matter because I look like "...the typical Hampshire College indie rock douchebag..."  Whatever, you're gonna die in like three years, grandpa.
